Agonda and South Goa Accommodation

A special mention of thanks to Nilesh and Gaurav Bhagat who made my 8th Goa trip a relaxing one. The idea this time was to laze around and literally do nothing for at least a week after burning some midnight oil for consecutive 7 months in Indore.

The hosts at Om Sai beach huts Agonda were welcoming. I have stayed with them before in 2008 and 2009 and this time I headed to Agonda instead of Palolem. Their huts were nice and they are still building them for this year. Loved the shack back opposite and treated myself to some cool drinks throughout the days.

Rated 5 star everything - Nilesh, All of Agonda, Cotigao, Chauri, Karwar, Om Sai, the hammocks...pictures following soon.

Guest Houses in Palolem

Guest Houses in Palolem have a distinctive comfortable stay. Palolem beach usually gets long term visitors and these houses are the best choice of accommodation, on a shoe-string budget. Some options are thuogh for the opulent ones. Guest houses are mainly situation in the Palolem market, just a notch away from the Palolem beach. Personally, I would prefer a guest house over a beach accommodation due to the heat and humidity. Visitors are virtually on the beach all the time, thus doesn't seems to be too logical to sleep in the same place in the nigt as well. The humidity levels can be high and the huts usually do not have an A/C.

Om Sai Guest House - This nice and friendly place is just 100 meters away from the beach near hte turn. It has eight rooms and some of them have A/C and refrigerator. Butterfly island and dolphin spotting tours can be arranged by the guest house. One is the preferred budget accommodation in Palolem.

Palolem Guest House - Near the southern end of the beach, the Palolem guest house has two blocks that have rooms with and without balconies. All the rooms have a double bed and attached baths.

Cleopetra Resorts - Situated about 1.5 kms from the beach on the road that goes towards the Patnem beach. Rates start from 800 Rs. and go upto Rs. 2400 for the best rooms in the peak season.

Palolem Beach Resort - This is adjacent to the beach and they have a huge area. They have around 20 huts.

Palolem Beach Huts

Beach hut accommodation at the the Palolem beach is common during the high season months of Late October till February. On the crescent shaped Palolem beach, many options of hut accommodation are available to visitors. If staying right where the action happens on the beach is your idea of staying, go for any of the following beach hut stay at the Palolem beach. Prices are indicative and I've given the links to the website wherever possible.

Palolem Accommodation

Accommodation at Palolem isn't a problem. h are many options for tourists to stay at or near the Palolem beach. The Palolem market has many permanent establishments whereas the beach itself is lined by beach huts and camps once the high season in Palolem arrives.

Though, typically Palolem does not (thankfully) boasts of the resort scene which is very much visible at the beaches in North and central Goa such as Baga, Calangute, Varca and Cavelossim.

Accommodation in Palolem, Goa can be typically classified into permanent v/s temporary accommodation, but for users sake of convenience, we will give a better classification which is more suited to your budget and comfort levels, things which my blog visitors will be hoping for. Also, we will be trying to make a blog entry which is updated every season for the latest available rates for Palolem accommodation. Promise.

Accommodation/Stay in Palolem

Guest Houses Palolem - Suitable for budget travelers with modest clean accommodations and many of them good facilities such as refrigerator, AC and TV.

Palolem Resorts - For comfort stays, all these accommodation types are better suited for luxury.

Palolem Hotels - Permanent establishments with a restaurant, have a variety of rooms and offer packages .

Palolem Beach Huts - These huts are, as the name suggests, temporary accommodation on the beach front whereby you can stay and listen to the roaring sounds of the waves hitting the shore. Pricing depends on the facilities and quality of construction.

Palolem Beach

It is one of the most idyllic and relatively unspoilt beach in Goa. Palolem beach is the southerly of all the beaches in South Goa and is in the Canacona region. The palolem beach is situated 47 kms south west of the Margao city and 2 kms away from the nearest railhead, Canacona. Canacona lies on the main railway line connecting Mangalore and Margao. Chaudi is the nearest market and the headquarters of the Canacona province. Canacona boasts of four beautiful beaches including the Palolem beach, other including, Rajbag beach, Patnem beach, Galjibag beach and Agonda beach.

The palolem beach is considered as one of the most beautiful beaches all over the world and was voted the world's best beach by the New York Times in 2006. Palolem beach is surrounded by the western ghats and they form a mystic landscape. Tourists can see the backdrop of mountains covered with lush green hills and small rivers meandering through them.

There is a small local population that inhibits the Palolem market and their prime occupation is to the needs to tourists and travelers.

Palolem beach, unlike the beaches in the North Goa, is not very well known for late night and rave parties. The beach is most suitable for backpackers and travelers who wish to move away from the wild party crowds. Not many Indian tourists visit Palolem beach. People come to Palolem to relax and unwind themselves and the answer to the question, what to do in Palolem is an obvious - do nothing.

However the scene is now changing with Palolem acquiring the image of a developed beach and with more and more visitors pouring in to Palolem, shacks, eating joints and night clubs are also opening up. Side to side aligned beach shacks offer facilities but nature lovers question the compromise on the beauty of this little heaven called Palolem. Water sports, including banana boats, paragliding and para sailing and snorkeling etc start during the high tourist rush season of December and January.

One major attraction on the Palolem beach is the trip to the butterfly island which includes dolphin sightings. Visitors usually see dolphins playing in the open sea. The rates for dolphin spotting might sore in the high season (as do all other rates). It is advisable that you bargain on them while on the Palolem beach.
